Project Profile
Located in East Shewa Zone, 2005 was the second year of Self Help’s Bora integrated rural development project – a project which is seeking to improve agricultural productivity and address such issues as the erratic rain fall, severe environmental degradation, gender inequality, poor access to health service, water and education in the area.

During the year the project distributed wheat and haricot bean seed to 272 farmers, a further 1,375 beneficiary farmers received improved quality potato and sweet potato tubers, while four new irrigation co-operatives, with a total of 48 members were established.
      
21 water storage ponds were constructed for irrigation purposes. Enset seedlings were provided to 47 selected farmers to grow for demonstration purposes, as the project develops.

163 farm households shared 980 improved breed poultry, while construction work on a new animal health post in the Bora area was started during 2005.

A total of 358,000 seedlings of different fruit and forage varietieswere planted under different planting strategies, 5,000 splits of vetier grass were planted on degraded lands, while farmers groups enclosed 50 hecares of land for planting and rehabilitation.

13 new rainwater harvesting ponds, with a capacity of holding 60,000 lts of water each were constructed.

Equipment was provided to the new local high school which was constructed the previous year, and eight local primary schools received a range of different support materials.

Building work on a new health centregot underway in early 2005, and the facility was nearing completion at the end of the year. Elsewhere, 766 mosquito nets were provided to almost 500 families, family planning courses were attended by 687 adults, and 210 pit latrines were constructed for local households.

To alleviate the problem of safe clean drinking water, the project rehabilitated two motorized water pumps and installed three new shallow well hand pumps. This effort enables more than 1440 households to get safe drinking water.

Education, training and awareness courses was provided to almost 900 local women on issues such as gender, and the development of locally run savings and credit co-operatives(SACCOs). Following this 11 new SACCO groups with a total of 338 members were organized. 110 improved
cooking stoves were manufactured and sold to local households.

Training on irrigation development, marketing of agricultural produces, poultry production, soil and water conservation was given to a total of 264 beneficiaries. 121 SACCO members were trained on SACCO management and 14 SACCO management committee members have visited a strong SACCO union and SHDI - Sodo project’s women activities. Business skill training was also given to 100 individuals.
