| | | Eritrea Support Appeal | capitaleritrea is pleased to be able to recommend to our members the development programmes being undertaken by Self Help, in Eritrea.
Self Help has been working in the country for more than 12 years, and currently employs an all-Eritrean staff of close to 70 people on its programmes in the country. Self Help works particularly closely with the Ministry of Agriculture, and many of its personnel are in fact seconded to the organisation from the Ministry.
The organisation works in partnership with local government ministries, and also and with local communities, and in the past 13 years has implemented a number of highly successful area-based development programmes at Mendefera and Keren. Self Help is currently working on similar five-year programmes in Gogne, and at Emni Haili.
| | Self Help is also involved in supporting a national beekeeping programme - that is seeking to develop the potential of beekeeping as an income generating activity in the country.
In 2008, Self Help begins work on a new programme of rural development activities at Mai Aini, and we are pleased to be in a position to ask you to lend your support to Self Help in this venture.
In the period 2008-2012, Self Help will undertake a broad programme of works at Mai Aini, seeking to improve farm productivity and farm household incomes, and to improve access to social services such as health and education for local communities living in this part of the south of Eritrea.
A series of ambitious rain-harvesting schemes are set to be carried out next year - as a cost effective way to improve access for local people to safe and clean drinking water, and also as a means of enabling rural communities to irrigated plots for horticultural production.
| | The project is also committed to investing in the construction of rainwater harvesting systems on schools and other local public buildings, will support local communities with the provision of seed stock and tree seedlings on a revolving fund basis, and will establish womens savings and credit co-operatives, and a number of other initiatives at Mai Aini in the coming years.
As a means of supporting development activities which seek to deliver real and lasting improvements to the lives of rural Eritrean people, we would urge our members to lend their support to this worthwhile project.
