Diary of a Field Officer provides readers with a behind the scenes look at the work of one of Self Help's agricultural extension workers, and the challenges that they face in their daily lives

Success of Farm Input Shop
More than 500 farmers are set to benefit from the recent completion of a new spate irrigation site that has just been opened at Tekowda, in the Gogne project area of Eritrea.

A water management technique that is used to divert flood water from mountain catchments and on to nearby plains, the Tekowda project will irrigate more than 250 hectares, providing 500 families - and more than 3,000 people with the opportunity to produce more food and cash crops. Improved quality sorghum seed stock has also been provided by the project.
Success of Farm Input Shop
The bustling success of the farm input shop developed with the support of Self Help in Eritrea’s Adi Mongoti village is living proof that project activities can and do live on long after the work has been completed.

For it is almost three years since Self Help finalised it’s project work in Mendefera, yet the two farm input shops which were build as part of the programme of works is busier now than it has ever been.

Managed and run by a local community co-operative association, the months of June and July see a steady procession of farmers to the shop – to buy fertiliser, seed and equipment in preparation for the new planting season. Read more

Irrigation Story
The modest, tin roofed rectangular dwellings within which each of their families is housed is a lasting testimony to the success of Mendefera’s ‘group of five’.

A hard-working and committed group of neighbours who came together in a joint venture when the Self Help project first came to Adi Mongoti in the late 1990’s, the group are a living and vivid example of how a secure water supply can completely transform an Eritrean family’s circumstances.

The shared purchase of a pump has provided the farmers and their families with a route out of a lifetime of poverty. Read more here
Halhal Dam & Irrigation Project
A group of local farmers are not the only ones in the mountain town of Halhal in Eritrea’s Keren Province to be grateful for a timely intervention by Self Help in the locality.

For the organisation’s decision to take over a rainwater harvesting dam project on the main approach to the town has had a massive positive impact on the lives of people right across the community of 25,000 people in the area.

Irrigated Horticulture
Mohammad Dreiss is one of twenty members of the farmers horticultural group being supported by Self Help in the village of Adhasvai, in the Halhal District of the Keren Project.

A returnee with his family in the late 1990’s from the refugee camps in Sudan, the locally born villager is one of several group members who are supplying tomatoes and other horticultural produce to the local market, thanks to the small rainwater storage dam and irrigation channels which the project constructed in the locality five years ago, in 2000.
