Project Profile
Strengthening the structuresand providing the skills, training and the supports which will enable Ethiopians to achieve a greater degree of economic empowerment, at regional, as well as local levels is the focus of this ambitious capacity building programme.

The project is working in both the Oromia, and the Southern Regions of the country, developing co-operative union structures, a savings and credit infrastructure, and mechanisms that can assist rural agricultural producers to not alone optimise their production, but also market and distribute the produce that they are growing.

In the Oromia Region during 2005 a range of activities, including the promotion of agricultural co-operatives and of agriculturaldiversification were undertaken to achieve this goal.

Farmers co-ops were supported to set up different improved seed multiplication and distribution systems, new links to achieve this goal were forged with agricultural research centres, and in the Arsi Zone of Oromia two dairy development co-operatives organized by the
project produced and supplied skimmed milk and butter to the market within their first six months period.

In the Southern Region the capacity building project undertook work in Sidama, Guraghe and Silitie zones - to initiate and strengthen the institutional capacity of farmers’ co-ops, as well as women and youth groups.

157.5 qt of improved seeds of field crops were distributed to 490 co-op member farmers, 149 qt of potato tuber were dispatched to 21 potato multiplier farmers, while other seeds also distributed.

Two farm input shops were opened under Sidama Elto and Melik FCU, and to reduce post harvest losses of potato 21 diffused light store were built in close co-operation with the farmers. In addition, 4 stores have been constructed for onion seed multiplier farmers.

Savings & Credit
Elsewhere, a total of 18 farmer’s Savings & Credit Co-Ops (SACCOs) have been established and the project has provided funding to 12 groups. 30 local SACCOs formed their own SACCO union with an initial capital of 500,000 and membership of 2008 (443 men and 1565 women).

‘Training of Trainers’ courses were delivered on gender mainstreaming to 38 individuals drawn from different government offices. In turn these trainers gave training to a total of 359 of their staff.

In 2005 the project also established 27 women SACCOs in the Southern Region.SHDI Ethiopia has been implementing a project on mainstreaming HIV/AIDS prevention and control across it’s programmes since 2003.

The objective of the project is to assist regional efforts towards the prevention and control of HIV/AIDS. The project has two components: prevention and control, and capacity building. Various activities have been implemented under these components

The distribution of leaflets, formation of support and awareness groups, school presentations and public discussions enabled the programme to reach close to 500,000 with it’s message on HIV/AIDS during 2005.
