Diary of a Field Officer provides readers with a behind the scenes look at the work of one of Self Help's agricultural extension workers, and the challenges that they face in their daily lives
Nikki's Eritrea Appeal
2FM Broadcaster Nikki Hayes has made an impassioned appeal to radio listeners to support the people of Eritrea - following her return from the Horn of Africa, to where she led Self Help's annual fund-raising trek, last month.

The RTE DJ has applauded the remarkable workthat Self Help is doing in Africa, and said that seeing the activities on the ground had really shown her the impact that Self Help's work is having with some of Eritrea's poorest rural communities.

Nikki Hayes was part of a 25 strong Irish group who visited the country for ten days, met with local communities, heard local peoples stories, and got the chance to understand at first hand the challenges that they face, and the actions that are being put into place to have a real and positive impact on peoples lives.

'It's an incredible place, the people are absolutely beautiful, but they face some really big challenges. The very things that we take for granted in our daily lives they have to live without', Nikki told RTE DJ Rick O'Shea when she phoned in to his programme from Africa, last month.

Nikki gave regular updates to her 2FM audience during her African trip, and has issued an appeal to listeners and the wider public to do what they can to support Self Help and the people of Eritrea.

'The whole principal that the organisation uses is spot on. Helping people to help themselves is the way that the people themselves want it. They don't want to have to accept our hand outs, but would much rather that we just gave them a helping hand', she said.

Why not donate to Nikki's campaign, or else donate to Self Help's Christmas Gift Campaign, where your seasonal presents can make a huge difference to the lives of people in Eritrea.
