Self Help Africa works at grassroots level in nine African countries, tackling poverty and improving the lives of local communities.
The organisation works both with its own African staff, and through local partners to undertake a range of integrated development programmes amongst rural communities in Burkina Faso, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Togo, Uganda and Zambia.
Self Help Africa has been working for nearly a quarter century in Ethiopia, and since the mid-1980's in Zambia. We began our work in our newest programme country - Burkina Faso, in Spring 2008.
The primary focus of our work is on assisting families and communities to grow enough food to feed themselves and to earn a sustainable living.
We do this by bringing simple and effective innovations to farming, managing natural resources and helping people access basic services like clean water, healthcare and education. We also seek to support communities to develop alternate income generating activities, to improve local savings and credit structures, and to assist rural Africans to overcome the challenges that are posed by HIV/AIDS, and by gender inequality.
