Self Help Africa has been working in Ghana since early 2005, when it took over responsibility for a number of established projects in Northern Ghana.
These had been run by the UK charity TRAX, which closed. The programme work aims to help men and women achieve more sustainable livelihoods. Focus is also placed on supporting the development of local groups - and improving their ability to work together. Support is provided for group development, provision of community training, and other resources.

Ghana became the first sub-Saharan country in colonial Africa to gain its independence, in 1957.
Although well endowed with natural resources, Ghana remains heavily dependent on international financial and technical assistance. Gold and cocoa production, and individual remittances, are major sources of foreign exchange.
The north of the country is highly susceptible to drought, and has also experienced substantial deforestation, overgrazing, and resulting soil erosion. In 2006 Ghana signed a Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) agreement, which aims to assist in transforming the country's agricultural sector.
