Diary of a Field Officer provides readers with a behind the scenes look at the work of one of Self Help's agricultural extension workers, and the challenges that they face in their daily lives
Ethiopia Overview 2006
Self Help in Ethiopia was involved during 2006 in the continuing implementation of four area based integrated rural development projects, together with a series of ambitious regional capacity building ventures in both the Oromia, and in the Southern Regions of the country.

The year saw one of it's most successful area based projects - at Dodota, finish after a six year cycle, while another, at Sodo, received a year-long extension to carry out a range of activities not undertaken in the original five years cycle.

Elsewhere a new area based project was started during the year at Huruta, while two projects - at Bora, and at Alemaya 2, continued in to their second and third years respectively.

The organisation, which now has a staff of more than 90 Ethiopians working in the country is directly helping close to 400,000 in it's area based development projects, while many millions are being assisted by the capacity building programmes - which are involved in the structural development of savings and credit unions, in supporting the development of a broad range of co-operative unions, and in promoting extensive seed multiplication and other initiatives at farmyard, at community, and at regional levels.

Under the direction of Dr. Awole Mela, Self Help in Ethiopia continues to grow and develop it's activities - and has contributed to improving the lives and the living conditions of close to one million Ethiopians since the organisation began it's work in the early 1980s.
