Project Profile
Self Help's Huruta Project was started in the Spring of 2006, with funding support provided by 151, the charitable foundation of the Irish Agricultural Wholesale Society(IAWS).

Situated adjacent to Self Help's earlier Dodota Project in the Arsi Zone, 140km south-east of Addis Ababa, the project objective is to increase agricultural production and productivity, increase farm household incomes, improve access to social services, and restore the natural resource base of the district.

Project components to be carried out over the five year term of the project will include improving crop productivity and promoting agricultural diversification, livestock production, natural resource management, education, rural water supply, health, mainstreaming of gender issues, womens development activities, HIV/AIDS mainstreaming, and local capacity building.

Much of the focus of activities in 2006 was on training and sensitisation of farmers and farm households, and the development of lead components that will be the focal point of project activities - including the construction of a new school at Legeba.

A series of initiatives in farmer based seed multiplication were also started in the early months of 2006, while demonstration plots for irrigated farming and backyard agro forestry activities were created, and small-scale irrigated farm sites developed.

13 individual nurseries were established across the project area to raise fruit tree and other tree species, while three women's savings and credit groups were established, following training provided by project staff.

The project team also organised field day exposure visits for farmers to Self Help's earlier project at Dodota, while work was done to forge a strong and productive relationship with government line department personnel working in the Huruta region.

A series of community meetings were convened during the year to begin a process of awareness raising and education around the threats posed by the spread of HIV/AIDS in the region.
