| | | | | | Project Profile | Dodota Integrated Rural Development is situated in the Rift Valley, some 125 km South East of Addis Ababa, in the heart of the Rift Valley.
The primary objective of the project which started in 1999 and reached a conclusion in late 2005, at the end of a one year extension, was to increase agricultural productivity and farm household income.
Actions were also taken to improve access to basic social services, to conserve the natural environment, and to build the capacity of the local communitythrough the promotion of co-operatives, of micro-finance schemes, and through programmes of training and education.
During its final year Self Help distributed improved quality wheat, bean and teff seed to 1,341 farmers, and supported other farmers in developing seed multiplication activities to benefit other small-holding farmers in the locality.
The project also distributed 24,850 enset seedlings to 482 farmers, and provided corms to 123 farmers for multiplication to ensure the availability of planting materials locally. |

| The primary focus of the work in 2005 was to effect a successful exit from the project area in a manner which would ensure the ongoing sustainabilityof the programme's work. This meant widespread training, the handing over of central nurseries to community producers, and the reinforcement of structures to ensure that local capacity existed to manage and continue the project's work.
The development of poultry production continued in 2005, with 600 birds being distributed to 100 farmers, while support for AI activities resulted in 421 cows being inseminated and 58 improved breed cattle being born.
The ongoing distribution and planting of tree seedlings saw more than 530,000 seedlings being distributed to almost 2,300 farm households, while 15 hectares of land were treated with biophysical conservation measures.
340 farmers participated in back yard agroforestry activities, and one new road run off harvesting pond (RRH) was constructed for the purpose of rain water harvesting for vegetable production.
A new public health clinic was completed and opened at Amigna Debesso and provides medical services to more than 7,000 people in the immediate catchment.
In the womens development programme a new secondary Savings and Credit Co-Op (SACCO) union was created, and 22 new savings groups were formed with courses and demonstrations on management, business skills, and gender mainstreaming issues being carried out.
Elsewhere, 1248 farmers and 137 ministry and local extension staff were involved in different training programmes during the year. | | | | Related Topics | | | | | |
