Project Profile
Alemaya 11 is the second area based programme that Self Help has implemented in the East Hararghe zone of Ethiopia’s Eastern Highlands.

The programme seeks to improve livelihood security by focusing on crop production, livestock production, natural resources management and conservation, water supply, public health, education, gender and HIV / AIDS mainstreaming and capacity building.

Entering it's third year in 2005, the project distributed seed stock for the production of sorghum, maize, haricot bean and groundnut as distributed to 4,490 farmers, 1,111 farmers received garlic bulbs and other vegetable seeds for production under irrigation and rain fed systems, while seed multiplication activities were
undertaken by 140 farmers to enable them to market and distribute cereal and pulse seeds. One irrigated farming plot was also developed on a co-operative basis, with 14 members involved.

360 pullets and cockerels were distributed to 40 households in the project area, 10 poultry shelters were built, 621 cows were inseminated artificially, one crush was also constructed to further facilitate AI activities, and a total of 43 women were provided with 86 dairy goats for the purpose of generating household income.

43 poor women benefited from the distribution of 86 dairy goats for the purpose of income generation.

20 individual nurseries, 2 satellite nurseries and 4 school nurseries were established, and a total of 254,883 trees, 154,120 fruit trees and 440,000 tillers of votiver grass were produced and distributed. 1,700 coffee seedlings were also purchased and distributed to 126 farmers.
      
2 km of gullies were treated to prevent further erosion and degradation, 11.5 km of soil bund was constructed in degraded farmlands and marginal lands and 23,200 micro basins were constructed for plantation purposes in areas that were enclosed for rehabilitation.

Constructions of rainwater harvesting tanks were done in four lowland areas, while 90 farmers were involved in developing homestead woodlots.

25 Non-Formal Education centres were set up in 15 areas, assistance was given with the establishment of 13 school clubs, desks and other equipment were provided to other schools.

More than 100 women received training in hygiene and nutrition, 100 latrines pit were constructed, and one new health post, serving the needs of over 7,000 people, was built.

Seven hand dug and three machine dug shallow wells were - benefiting a total of 3025 people.

The project had established three womens savings and credit groups involving 188 women, while 28 other women received training.

Elsewhere, 180 farmers, 6 project staff and 11-line department staff have been trained on various disciplines.
