Project Profile - 2005
Self Help began it’s fourth area based programme in Eritrea in Gogne in the north west of the country during 2005.

The Gogne project area covers 12 villages in a region that is extremely sparcely populated, with a total habitation of almost 21,000 people.

The primary objective is to improve agricultural productivity and livelihood security for the beneficiary communities living within the region – where many of the farmers are semi-nomadic agro-pastoralists.

Discussion with the farmers disclosed that livestock plays an important social and economic role, and that oxen and camel play a key role in the lives of local communities. The shortage of fodder for animals, combined with the need to travel distances of up to 13 km to the nearest rivers for water, illustrate some of the major challenges that face local people.

Inadequate veterinary services mean that livestock has been susceptible to outbreaks of disease, and the consequences of these outbreaks can be devastating.

Following baseline surveys and needs assessment activities undertaken with beneficiary communities, the project is also putting in place measures to address the need to improve access to farm inputs, the need to improve access to water for human consumption, animals, and for irrigation purposes.

Rainwater harvesting systems will be both the most cost effective and sustainable way to achieve this objective.

During the start-up phase of the Gogne project measures to begin community horticulture activities began in four sites and more than 100,000 fruit tree and other seedlings were produced and distributed to beneficiary farmers.

Elsewhere, activities to divert a river for irrigation purposes at Tekawda was started, and the rehabilitation of a ministry nursery site at Tokombia, where water pipes were also installed, was also carried out.

Training on home economics was provided to 35 women in Gogne, while 40 households were provided with improved fuel-efficient cooking stoves. During the year 60 local women undertook a training course on the construction of these stoves, and are in the process of establishing income generating activities with these new skills.

Plans were put in place for further training for women beneficiaries on the development of micro-finance savings and credit co-operatives, and much of the preparation work for the development of this component were put into place during 2005.

Staff on the project attended training at Asmara University during the year, while extension workers received HIV/AIDS awareness training .

During the year a small office was also constructed in the Gogne area to provide a local administrative headquarters for Self Help to co-ordinate it’s activities in the project area.
